Minutes for meeting 4/19/09 ( 2:50-4:10)

New Space found to hold classes (Corey & Angel):

• both Corey and Angel know of a new space in Kensington Mkt that might be available for some of our classes. It's a tech focused space but host/hold all kinds of different wkshps/classes. It's on Baldwin above Graffiti's. It's not a very big space and would hold 10 max. They may have a cost for using space. Angel is planning on looking into it further. They have an open public night on Tuesdays.

• Possum is going to look into the possibility of using the back room at Global aware in the mkt.

• Petra spoke of her new Loft space in 888 Dupont (cr of Ossington) which is wants to offer for classes for AFU. The space still needs some wk. It can hold up to 40+ for screenings and talks, several different formats will be available depending on nature of class. These include (stacking chairs &/or benches) for a circle in allotted space, large table that seats 10 comfortably, a rug to sit on fl with cushions and an island in a lg open space for food/cooking related classes. There is discussion of using/borrowing some of the AFU's $ towards building/buying things that are needed to make the place functional. Angel has proposed building 'benches' (that hold storage space under the seats, closed in) and is drawing up some ideas and will help cost out what is needed for next meeting.

A meeting is proposed to everyone in the next few weeks for everyone to come by and see space and discuss this in greater detail, We hope to have some of the drawings and costs worked out by then. It will likely be on a weekend for either brunch time or a late aft so it can fit into people's schedules. TBA

• Petra suggested using the Food Share's space on Queen St, in the basement in the old butcher bldg across from MTV. Going to investigate use of the space.

• Corey has offered to be the point person for anyone who'd like to brainstorm and plan a course. His contact Info will posted on the web site. Once we have some spaces secured we were discussing a plan to do some MAJOR outreach.

Bank account update:

• there is about $700 available of use of a concensed upon project in the AFU bank account.

• it's been proposed that some of that money be used to invest in the 888 Dupont Space to secure future use of a space to meet.

• people suggested that different Banks offer different fees for holding $. Michael suggested that we investigate both the Bank of Montreal, President's Choice and Alterna as two such backs of hold any money we have

• Possum suggested that we consider collectively whether we continue moving fwd, an organization that doesn't rely on $ to operate or if we do...what are people's thoughts and vision around this? How do we raise funds? (special events?) what is the money used for (going to conferences such as the upcoming Santa Cruz one or RAT etc?) To be discussed at next meeting.

Telephone Hotline Update:

• Angel researched sources for the info line so people can call in for AFU course info. Queen West Health Center offers such a service at a cost of $10/3 months. We need to further find out how long the outgoing message is to access whether this is an adequate service. We discussed and agreed that we would take turns being the appointed 'phone' person, checking messages and responding and dealing with the phone.

Christian has a poster ready to go which is just waiting for a phone #. This will be printed once we've secured spaces to hold classes.

Santa Cruz Free School conference

• Possum mentioned that we were contacted and invited to speak there (http://santacruzanarchist.org/free-skool-conference/ ) We will likely not be able to take advantage of this unless one or us is going out there already (something we could used saved funds for in the future?)
