Creative Resistance

This course is designed to explore creative ways to promote social change. It will be very hands-on, and there will be no readings unless the class decides otherwise.

The objectives of this course are:

1) To provide creative individuals with some guidance in using their creativity as a catalyst for change. 2) To help activists to learn about a broader range of tools to utilize in their projects. 3) To build community through fun group activites.

Although I have written an outline for the class, it is my intention that on the first day, it will be altered to fit the interests of the class-members.

Class 1 (May 2): Discussion about art and social change. - class will discuss class outline and alter it. - Materials needed for future classes will be discussed.

Class 2 (May 9): Street Theatre - Discussion about street theater. - The class will write and perform a piece of street theatre. - If there is interest: Discussion on starting a street theatre group.

Class 3 (May 16): Dumpster diving. - Discussion of dumpster diving. - Dumpster diving field trip.

Class 4 (May 23): Recycling practicum. - The class will use the garbage that they found in last week’s field trip to make pieces of art.

Class 5 (May 30): Graffiti - Discussion about public art, significance of graffiti. - Class will look at examples of graffiti. - Making stencils.

Class 6 (June 6): Street Art Practicum

Class 7 (June 13): Music - Class-members will bring in music that they see as provocative of social change. - Writing a protest song.

Class 8 (June 20): Open - To be decided - Suggestions: Subway parties, dance
