This course will examine not only ruling elites but also the nature of hierarchy, power and class, and the relationships between those who rule and those who are ruled.

Throughout human history there have been oligarchies which have wielded undue power in comparison to their numbers. From the military oligarchy in Sparta, the dynasties of Egypt and China, to the plutocracy of our modern world, ruling elites have controlled governments and economic systems to the detriment of populations across the globe. Are there some who will always rule, and others who will always be ruled? Is hierarchy, power and class a part of human nature?

Further, who are the members of the ruling elite now in power in our Western (and non-western) countries? How far back does the immense family wealth of many in the upper class go? Are there a select few who control the fate of much of the world and control not only the financial systems, but also the so called democratic systems of government? What kind of systems of control have they placed in our societies to remain in power, and in what ways have they profited and manipulated wars, crime and crisis to gain more power and wealth?

Due to the extremely broad nature of this course, all the areas that I want to cover will be done briefly, allowing students to investigate further for themselves all the intricacies of the subject being discussed. I will provide an extensive list of readings through the site, but will prepare a one to two page synopsis on the topic for that particular week. Further readings will be available online.
