The AFU is a Toronto based volunteer run collective which co-ordinates courses, workshops, and discussion groups on a range of subjects. The students are the teachers and administrators. Our aim is to tease the old distinction between teacher and taught, facilitating inclusive learning spaces while maintaining a commitment to intellectual rigeur.

The "A" in AFU means things are run under the principles of consensus decision-making, decentralized organizing, and a non-hierarchical structure. All you need to take part is a respect for this approach; you don't have to join a club, and you don't have to consider yourself an anarchist.

No tuition. No grades. No lines at the registrar's office.

If you think we're made for eachother, then you're probably right. Come to a meeting, check out a class, or propose a course.

  • With a bit of an AFU renaissance underway, and some recent questions over what is and isn't suitable for AFU courses and events, the February meeting will be focused on organizing a "re/treat" (or maybe just day of discussion, reflection and workshops) to renew some sort of collective vision for AFU, remind ourselves where it's been, and figure out where it's going. Members old and new, and those who are just curious, are encouraged to come and shape the agenda, share their thoughts, and find ways to contribute.
