AFU GM Minutes 06-17-2007
Present: Ryan (facilitating), Rachel, Michael, Possum, Angel, Enda, Lydia, Christian, Akua, Rob
1. Class Check-in
a. Before we started, a concern was expressed over why course facilitators weren’t coming to GMs as much? It used to be a regular practice for facilitators to come in to GMs and report on how their courses were going. Ideally, if the facilitator can’t come than they shold try and get one of the people taking their course to go for them.
b. Ryan reported that The Desire and Japanese Cinema and Topics in Sexuality (he checked in w/ Dee) classes are chugging along nicely. Possum and Angel related that The Generosities Project class is wrapping up and folks are putting together a bike, possibly for Bike Pirates, possibly for the use of the general Torontonian population.
2. Finance
a. Ryan reported on the new funds from CUPE. There was discussion of the pricing of a projector and how much that would eat up of the new and existing funds. There appears to be a regular and ongoing need for a projector in courses.
b. Decisions:
- i. Ryan will look into setting up a bank account for the AFU so we can cash cheques (important!)
- ii. Ryan will price out a projector
- iii. The Finances Committee will begin to figure out who else we can hit up for cash and develop procedures for how we deal with possessions we might accumulate (ie the projector). Who keeps it? Where? How is it accessed? By who?
3. Email Communication
a. Concern was expressed about the usurping of email lists by members. Recently somebody on the promotions committee responded personally to an email (forwarded to the promotions committee email list by Rachel M) from somebody who had written to the
info@anarchistu.org to see whether the AFU had materials for an “anti-calendar” they were putting together. The concern raised at the GM is that the email response to somebody outside of the AFU was not run by other promotion committee members, was forwarded to a public listserv, and that involved proposing things that were not at issue in the first place.
b. Decision: There’s a really easy solution to this! If you’re going to take an action on behalf of the AFU or one of its committees, clearing it with the people on the committee makes is a great idea.
4. Par-tay! Dance Dance Revolution
a. June 30th! 5$ or pay what you can!
b. We need 2 people at the door to ID folks and sell tickets. We’ve filled the early slots, but there is still need for people to be at the door at all times! Sign up now!
- i. Slots: 8-9: Enda and Ryan, 9-10 Rachel M and Possum, 10-11 Angel and Rob, 11-12 Ryan and Could be you!, 12-1 Could be you!
c. Deejays (Christopher, James, Christian, Ryan): The owner wants you to set up sound early on in the day, say around 4 or so.
d. We’re not sure whether we have access to turntables
- i. Decision: Ryan will coordinate w/ deejays and, if necessary, track down the decks.
5. Course Proposals
a. Akua proposed two workshops, one on natural childbirth and one on raw food diet. Both were accepted and we hope to have the outlines on the website soon.
6. New procedures
a. We experimented with the role of the person who gets folks who have arrived after the meeting’s start up to speed with what’s happened thus far, etc. It seemed to work well. There was a discussion as to how long this responsibility should last for and about what this meant for other responsibilities carried out as a part of the AFU’s operation, like web-mistressing and taking care of the email flow on the other end of the
info@anarchitu.org email address. These are positions which involve a good deal of unacknowledged work, and it was generally agreed that as a group we’re grateful to the folks who carry them out.
b. Decision: Christian will be the greeter, a position that will be passed on to a new person, provided there is interest, every three months. The greeter is responsible for publicly inviting new folks to take on this position at the end of his or her term. Also, coordinating email flow is similarly now a 3-month position, to be filled by Rachel, who will try and find a replacement at the end of her tenure. The webmistress position, being a tad more technical and requiring particular skills, will be a 12 month position. Possum will serve for the next 12 months and, you guessed it, will try and find somebody to replace him in that role at that point.
7. Visioning Meeting Check-In
a. We did a go around about the Visioning Meeting and how we thought it went. These are some of the things that came up:
- i. People generally thought it went well
- ii. The organizers were publicly lauded for their kickass work
- iii. People expressed not wanting to lose the momentum developed and (Decision) committed to posting something to the email lists so as to get the new committees going
- iv. Others suggested we need to keep in mind anarchist methodologies and practices in our daily encounters with each other, including at GMs.
