Course Proposals:

“Working Class Fiction” Course proposed by: Toby (in place of James) A course to study or discuss both written and on-screen fiction of many varieties, and how they portray the working class, and what the history of fiction is in relation to the working class.

Venue

Pending. Toby suggested using hir own living room in the event that a venue does no present itself in time. Discussion & Concerns: Concerns regarding lengthy reading material, but people taking course won't be expected to read everything, according to discussion with Toby. Course Status: Accepted by consensus.

Motion for 10 minute time limit is proposed for the course proposals, in order to fit the entire agenda into the meeting without running overtime. Motion is consensed upon & accepted.

“Science Fiction & Climate Change” course going well.

Course Proposals continue:

“Surplus Sanity: Horror, Literature & Madness”

1. 5 Hours per week, 10 week course.

Venue

Available. Discussion & Concerns: Concerns were raised over the treatment of the subject of madness and/or mental illness in the course. Some people wanted to be sure that the theme of madness would be treated sensitively and contextually, and that the fiction being read & discussed would not colour the course in a way which propagated an unrealistic portrayal of madness and/or mental illness. Course Status: Course accepted by consensus, with the suggestion that a “theme breakdown” be presented.

“What Does It Mean To Live With Ecological Integrity In Toronto?” Course Proposed By: Brian & Natalie

1. -10 week course

Venue

Brian's house. This course examines what it means to live with “Ecological Integrity”in Toronto. The course will examine ways to live in an ecologically friendly way, and will employ hands on experiential learning methods.

Status

Course approved by consensus, with cautions towards a proposed “dumpster diving” activity.

Toby took on the position of “Greeter” for the next two months.

AFU Money Issues

We have a check for $1,000.00 from QP, roughly $400.00 of which has already been spent. The problem however, is that we are having problem cashing the check because we don't have official non-profit status, and the the check is made out to “Free University”, and not a single individual. There was discussion of getting another organisation to cash the check for us.

New Anarcho-Communist group starting.

Future Agenda Items:

Discussion needed on what “official” position the university will take on courses which may involve illegal activity (eg, “Dumpster Diving”). AFU Party Debriefing. The serving/consumption of Alcohol at AFU events, the use of licensed venues for AFU events, and how this effects participants in AFU who may be under 19 years of age.
