Summaries of Current Classes
- ArtAndCollaborativeApproaches
- Facilitator: Luis Jacob
- An examination of collaborative approaches in contemporary art, this course will examine assumptions about art, and the roles of the artist and the viewer. We will be discussing our own assumptions during the beginning of the course. We will also be discussing a series of specific art projects during the course, in order to develop a shared language of various approaches to collaboration in the arts.
- TheRussianRevolution
- Instructor: Alan O'Connor
- An introduction to modern history through a case study of the Russian revolution and its aftermath. The emphasis is on examining different approaches to writing history.
- ForecastingTheFuture?
- Facilitator: Brian
- Who knows what the future holds? Me!...I'm kidding- but along with your insights, a vision of possibilities appear in the crystal ball. We will discuss the disputed effects of the coming biotech age, as well as many other issues. What might the world be like, and what do we want it to be like?
- ExperimentalLiterature?
- Facilitator: Chris
- This course is designed to serve as a participatory exploration into the history of 'experimental fiction'- a term which will be qualified and clarified at the first class meeting. In the first half of the course we will attempt to collectively define and delineate the historical 'anti-canon' of experimental literature, detailing early literary deviations by different groups and individuals, as well as significant literary avant-garde movements which have contributed to the production of 'experimental literature'. In the second half of the course we will begin by examining various different 'theoretical' texts which have acted to shape and influence forms of experimental fiction, and then move on to discuss the use and deployment of specific 'experimental' literary techniques, the (inter)relationships existing between 'experimentation', 'form', and 'genre', and finally, the nature of 'experimental literature' in the contemporary, postmodern context. By the end of the ten weeks it is hoped that, after having directly contributed to the structure of the course and the selection of texts to be examined, each student will have submitted either a short essay on 'experimental' fiction/literature or a short piece of 'experimental' writing.
- PoliticsThroughTheMedia
- Facilitator: Sam Cartmell e-mail: sam_cartmell@yahoo.ca
- This course aims to examine the ways that the modern media function. And the role that politics plays in the process. The first half of the course will involve a detailed reading of Chomsky and Herman's Manufacturing Consent. The second half of the course will examine the content and production of alternative media.
- RadicalPerspectivesOnSexuality
- Facilitator: Rob Teixeira + Email: satyr9@sympatico.ca
- This introductory 8 week course will examine sexuality and politics. Radical perspectives about sexuality and society will be explored. How has our culture/society constructed sexual identity? How do we come to know ourselves as sexual beings and what larger structures does our "private" practices express and inhabit? The course comes from the fundamental perspective that notions of "biology is destiny" need to be radically questioned. Sexuality and politics will be discussed within the context of specific issues.
