Brazilian Democratic Schools

The Lumiar

The Lumiar Institute emerged from an idea by Ricard Semler, a businessman who envisioned a school that would break with traditional approaches to schooling based on sequential curricula, impoverished by inflexible courses and an excessive focus on theory.

The formation of values, taking pleasure in learning, solidarity, liberty and democracy, are themes that are not necessarily covered by the traditional curricula and its structure based on 50-minute slots.

Activismo ABC Portuguese

Translated into English from the site:

The Ativismo ABC is a collective of libertarian self management, solidarity and ecology. Its principles are the freedom of participation, cooperation, the valuing of differences and the refusal of inequality, the exploration of oppression, either of human being or extra-human being. We not only aim at the action of protest but also the realization of our ideals.

To participate at Ativismo ABC is to simply inhabit our space. You can be of any age, sort, color, belief or preference, since that is concordant with our principles.

Our main project has been the House of the Black Lagartixa "Malagueña Salerosa", a space of culture and experimentation, open to the general public.

In the house we have a community library and horta, courses, workshops, lectures and several other proposals or activities:

  • Picture of Mutual Aid: it offers a service and it is supplied by the gratuitous offers of others! Currently affixed on the wall of the Room of the Ócio ...

  • Trunk of Gifts: it donates something or it catches something gratuitously! Located in the entrance of the house and put to great use!

  • Tesinho: Desires come to a point of convergence and they fight for new customs, a new outlook and new action in education: Libertarian Pedagogy. The Tesinho was born inside of the Somaiê from the perception of the neuroses and authoritarianisms that are born of educational processes and family structure. In symbiosis with the Ativismo ABC, it also has the House of the Black Lagartixa as one of its places of experimentation.

  • Permacultura: It participates in the transmission of practical knowledge of ecological and sustainable processes from many diverse cultures to the Permacultura (international project of living ecologically) for the house of the Black Lagartixa "Malagueña Salerosa", and from there to our neighborhoods and our lives. "An environment that demands constant labour is an environment on the brink of collapse." Currently walking the sequóia steps ...

  • Lunch Gratis: All Friday, it is a supplied by abandoned food collected for free and then cooperatively prepared by those who come! It feeds and creates surplus!

  • Libertarian Cooperativismo: it comes to give to forces in the creation of cooperative parallel bars and perpendiculars to the House of the Black Lagartixa. Currently we are constructing a shed that will serve for these experimentations. It wants to botar the hand in the mass? IT COMES IN KNOWING THEM OF CLOSE! [???]
