April 3, 2007 AFU visioning meeting

1. Purpose of visioning meeting
2. Ideological/ethical project?
3. Why are we doing this? What are our goals?
Possum
- Maybe to get more people interested? To get people thinking about the issues
- Is there any time when hierarchy makes sense?
- Is there an implicit hierarchy that we aren’t addressing
Ryan:
- Has concerns about how the term "anarchy" has been used to justify childishness and violence in past meetings.
- Wonders if the AFR should set boundaries to talk about the ethical project of AFU
- Expanding the role of AFU, what more can we do as a group?
Enda:
- Visioning to help newer people feel like part of the group
Mike:
- Agrees, how to get more process into meetings
- Would like to branch beyond courses and typical anarchist circles in Toronto
- Make it a resource for political struggles
- Who are we inviting – to the visioning and AFU in general
- Change name – drop anarchist
Tobie:
- Likes having education outside of institutions
- Wants AFU to continuing to reach out to wider circles
Rachel m:
- Name, structure, presence online/in public
- Create a manifesto, so that we can have an identity
- Have something to make it clear to new people where we stand
- Ways to deal with conflict
Rachel g gave her ideas but since she was the one taking mins her ideas were not recorded!
2. Workshop ideas
- We should talk about changing the name at the visioning meeting
- How do you work with consensus?
- anti-oppression workshop to address our group demographics
- think about issue of facilitating
Possible outcomes- change of name and manifesto
3. Who will attend?
- Promote it with the classes, anyone on the mailing list
- Provide outline of visioning meeting, invite everyone to come with RSVP
- To attract new direction and energy
- Sending out to anti-authoritarian organizations in Toronto (broadly defined)
- Put up posters (mike, enda and ryan said they would take this on and both Rachel’s are up for postering!)
4. How long should it be?
- Maybe 2 consecutive Saturdays, then the general meeting on Sunday.
- Discussion that a full weekend was too long and whether people would like to keep the GM and the visioning meeting separate.
5. When should it be?
Discussion on whether June would work or still be too early
6. Breakdown of the day
- Discussion on whether consecutive or concurrent workshops would be best
- Intro to anarchism dropped as the issue of using anarchy in the name is up for debate
- Break the days into themes*
